My FT-847 is my main radio, a generous gift from a family friend Alan (G4OJN - SK).

I don’t have the experience to really compare with anything else, but it definitely seems like a fantastic rig and works really nicely.

Like many (all?) other 847s, it suffers from a slightly unfortunate “bug”: the volume control goes from zero to LOUD in the first few fractions of a turn. I’ve never turned it up beyond that for fear of what might happen! There are many documented mods to fix this (e.g. https://radioaficion.com/mods/ft-847-volume-control-mod/) but I’ve never quite been brave enough (especially on something with so much sentimental value). It’s not actually much of an issue, and hey, if I ever want to hear the radio from a long distance, I’m probably sorted!
